Phone issue

Well, I did buy a CSL card as recommended in the newbie post set, so that I could make local calls with a local number, however, it seems AT&T will take several eons to get back to me with an unlock code - probably past the trip time length.

Is there any way I could get a disposable phone here, and if so, where?  I guess I could go buy a cheapie knockoff phone and use the card I bought....

Thanks!

What country are you talking about?  In HK, the phones are mostly unlocked.  If you're saying AT&T, it seems like the USA.  In the USA, you can simply go to Walmart and buy a tracfone or a Virgin Mobile phone that already includes a sim card for less than $30.  Just buy some minutes if you need more than the 20 to start.  It includes you own number when you activate the phone.  Hope that helps.

He came from US to HK, bought a HK SIM, and found he can't use it in his US phone.

OP if you're looking for a cheap-and-cheerful phone, try Fortress or Broadway - they tend to have the best prices for mass-market electronics.  You can find them all over - some of the bigger ones are in Mong Kok and in Harbour City in TST, but you can't go far without finding one or the other.

If you're feeling more aggressive you could try going to Sham Shui Po - there's a street there that sells second-hand stuff, guess you might find a phone.  But if you're on a short trip, you're better off just going into a couple of high-street stores.

the other option is that you splurge for a better phone, keeping in mind that you get at least a triband so that you can use it when you go back to the US as well.  phones, with a couple exceptions (iphone, blackberry, etc), sold in north america are inferior to those sold in asia.  otherwise, i agree with bro DArtagnan: SSP is the place to get a cheap 2nd-hand though you can try the computer centre in wan chai too.  there are a couple places in CWB, i think, but you're better off getting a new one if that's the district you're in.

I agree.  Just walk around the plazas at the area you're staying at.  There are a lot of them that sells used phones.  Most phones in HK are unlocked.  In fact, harder to find one that is locked.  Only USA carriers lock them because they make you sign up a contract to get a discount on the phones.  In HK, you can pick up a used phone for a fairly low price.  No need to go through the hassle of unlocking a USA phone.

I'm in TST (Hotel Panorama), so I'll try checking around several areas.

Thanks all!  Looking forward to posting my first report.

it's true for Canadian service providers too.  greedy bastards just want to lock you up to a contract and then tag you w/ roaming charges and what not when you travel.  completely against the design of GSMphones and annoying as hell.  another one of HK's few virtues that they don't pull this kind of crap

AT&T should email you an unlock code within a few minutes after talking to a customer service person.  I've had all my phones throughout the last 3 years unlocked that way.  I would just call them back in the US (use Skype or something similar) and say that it's an emergency, you're already in HK.  Give them the model number and IMEI and they should send you something back right away.

Hopefully the phone you bought with you from the US is a quad band.  If you have a tri-band you're limiting yourself to the 1800 band.  That should be good enough for 98% coverage, but in some parts of NT I noticed that I was only able to get 900 band coverage.

HK BTW is at least 2 years ahead of the US when it comes to phone features.

Newbie here,

It looks like my North American phone will be locked while I'm in Hong Kong.

You mentioned I could pick up a $200 phone at Golden Computer Centre.  Is that in HK$?

How much would a phone cost at Fortress or Broadway?

Thanks

You can pick up a cheap phone from either Fortress or Broadway for around HK$300 or less.

Don't expect a snazzy phone at that price

Check Fortress website - http://www.fortress.com.hk/

i'm not sure if they have these private unlocking services in the US. here in the UK, its the same story
as the mobile service provider locks your phone and will only give you the codes to unlock it on any
network once you have spent a certain pre-paid amount or reached a certain stage of your contract.

what i did was to go to one of those shops that sold souvenirs on the high street and got it unlocked
for 7 pounds. took about 45 minutes for them to do it and it has worked with any foreign SIM card since.

Depending on what phone you have, you can get it unlocked at Sincere Building, Argyle Street, Mong Kok for about HK$80-HK$150 ... This is a plaza / mall just for mobile phones.  Even if you can't unlock your phone here, you can definately find a cheap second hand one for you to get by
