How/Where to get cheap reliable cell phone in HK?

Hey all,

i'm heading out to HK in a few weeks and would like to know if any travelers there can tell me where/how they got access to a temporary cell phone in HK.  i saw one on expedia, but they were asking like $40 for 5 days.  I'm sure theres gotta be cheaper ones available.  any ideas?  thx.

Can't you take your own phone and then buy a sim card at any 7-11 shop in Hong Kong?  Sim cards are cheap.

The easiest option is buying a prepaid sim card a 7-11 and putting it in your GSM phone from overseas. There isn't much of a rental market since HK uses GSM phones which are highly standard.  If you have a "locked" phone (common in the US) or non-GSM phone (common in Japan or Korea) then you could pick up a very cheap phone to buy (and can use again in the  future in most of the world).  If you really don't have a GSM phone there are cheap phones sold near Golden Computer center in Sham Shui Po.  There are also cheap phones for sale near Worldwide plaza where the philipino maids hang out and buy low end phones to call home.

I've seen in some countries that PAYG sim expires if not used for a certain period of time. IS this true for HK sims?

Yes the CSL sim card I bought in HK in October has been SMSing me daily saying it will expire in X number of days so 6 months isn't bad.

You can also get even cheaper sim cards from shops in the NT they cost $13 each have 5 mins credit on them and they cannot be topped up. Just use and toss.

Just get your phone you use now in your home country unlocked and use it in HK,

World-Wide Plaza is the shopping centre on 3 levels on the lower floors of World-wide House. Easy to find, use the MTR to the Central-Station and leave exit A or B.

There is also building in Mongkok that sells only cell phones.  Prices is are lower than retail, they sell used and new.

Instead of buying a cheap cell phone just to use in HK, why don't u buy a good one that you can take back hone to use. (unless u are using a crackberry or iphone)  Because HK has way better selection and the phones are unlocked.

are there sim cards for data plan?  i've got a unlocked sony ericson pda from the states.  it'd be a great help if i could search this site while roaming around HK.  if there are, how much extra do they cost on top of the normal phone sim cards?

also, planning on hitting up Macau.  if i get a sim card in HK, is it considered roaming when i get to Macau?

thanks for your help.

If it is WIFI compatable go and visit a PCCW shop and buy a month's voucher it was something like $130 for 30 days of WIFI on their network , this meant shopping centres and anywhere there was a PCCW phone box , inc MTR stations , my last tour of HK was done via this for free, as they gave a 30 day free trial I do not know if they still run this.

It will be roaming when you hit Macau.

You can also check out 3 HK and CSL for their prepaid sims.
Here r the links to their sites:

Check out pccwmobile and pccwwifi.  You should be able to get your prepaid sim, or data plan or wifi plan from any of the pccw shops.

- When you purchase from PCCW, is it a mobile broadband prepaid sim card? With the sim card, the phone is able to make calls normally and access the internet via wifi network (instead of over 3G or GPRS, which is costly)
- Does the PCCW plan provide unlimited data usage? or is there a maximum cap?

You can always pick up a throw away with sim card at the airport when you hit HK on your way through.  That way you don't waste any time!

What all the bros said - you can pick up phone sim cards from 7-11 or authorized cell phone company stores.

As for which one is the better variety - I'm not too sure.
