She had no idea what I was talking about. So I said it in a way that I thought a Cantonese speaker would say it (I know a little Cantonese). Suddenly her eyes widened and she was shocked. And then she told me. I was really surprised that she could understand my pronunciation.

#17 Post at 20-11-2007 20:50  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Poor guy Years ago I patted a local friend on the shoulder after he had lost a lot of money on the races and said "poor guy"....there were several other local friends in the group and they all burst out laughing and repeated "poor guy, poor guy" and the first guy said" yeah, I really poor guy"....but he pronounced it more like "pook guy" and they all seemed to think this was really funny....can anyone explain what this was all about? Does "pook guy" mean something in Chinese, or what? If so, what does it mean that was so funny?

The literate meaning is 'fallen (by tripping) street'. It's a slang for name calling. You can also add 'sei' in front of the slang and it becomes 'sei poke guy'. 'Sei' means die or death. I don't think there is really any real meaning to it beside ill wishing. It's like another name calling 'sei xhian'. The literate meaning is 'die shovel'. Does it really have a real meaning behind it? I don't think so. Let's try this one, 'hum ka xhian'. The literate meaning is 'all family shovel'. It's another ill wishing which translates to wishing your whole family die. Interesting, isn't it? Cantonese is full of slangs like that. I would like to think of Cantonese as the language king of slang and profanity. lol
