Introducing Adaware - Software to clean adware in your computer system

http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

from the site:

Ad-Aware is no ordinary anti-spyware, it is the original anti-spyware product, offered to consumers worldwide to protect their personal and home computers from malware attacks. And today, with over a quarter of a billion downloads, computer users put their trust in Ad-Aware more than any other anti-spyware software program.

I use Webroot Spy Sweeper, tho not free, it's more comprehensive, offers real-time protection (instead of only catching things during a sweep.) Spy Sweeper also scans for root kits.

But AdAware is good and free - tho I think they do have a paid version - AdAware Pro?

there are paid versions but IMO not necessary for personal use;
Corporates must pay for, while the consumer can get it for free
and besides the free version is sufficient for a home based system that is not networked

recommended this application and one bro found 1400+ entries; guess he didn't know what the sites he visited, did behind his back
