I'm a customer of HSBC too and other another bank.  Their online banking is not bad, yes that annoying little black security number generator.  How the hell does it work?  I know how to use it but what's the security protocol behind it?

it's a small gadget that generates a random number which will be valid for only 30 or 60 minutes, and is used as another password in addition to your login and your password; the number generated will only work with the account and cannot be used by another account.

I am wondering though; what powers the gadget? a tiny battery?

There is a tiny battery inside which lasts a few years. The whole unit needs to be replaced when the battery runs out.

All electronics produces low level of radiations. As it was not intended to be used as ear rings there may not be sufficient shielding. Your brain may get fried if you wear them for a long period of time.
