If you want your own place, you really have to be pulling in a lot of money. You don't share this mentality. Just wondering, are you not from HK? My solution would be to just tell your mom how you feel. Tell her you want to start saving your own money, but in exchange for not paying her, help her round the house or something. Of course, some take care of their kids throughout college also. Some posters point out the good points that the rent in HK is expensive. I do understand that the privacy issue can be a big problem also. Being nagged on by parents can be quite unbearable at times. I know because I was in those shoes before. If you are paying rent to them, you shouldn't have to live by their "rules" anymore. If you feel that they are asking you for too much rent, tell them. Parents tend to be nosy and nag on you a lot because they care about you. The longer you endure, the more $$$ you save up. Thus the more likely you can buy your own house. Remember, patience is golden, or "yun dak si kum".
