#2 Post at 1-2-2010 11:45  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L There is a little-known, but quite useful website that may be useful as you plan your trip to Hong Kong: www.google.com By the way, make absolutely sure that data/GPRS works on a prepaid SIM card, as for some carriers it does, and some it doesn't. (Or only use it where you have wifi. Or use software that has a map preloaded already, without needing Google Maps.)

#5 Post at 1-2-2010 13:45  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L prtrader, both "three" and "peoples" have GPRS data disabled until you add a Data Plan to the Prepaid SIM Cards. It's quite pricey I must admit therefore I stuck to free WiFi at McDonalds. It's 20minutes of free WiFi per device per day.

#7 Post at 1-2-2010 14:45  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Reply #1 prtrader's post Googles maps works great on an iPhone in HK, I use it all the time, very accurate.  However, if your phone is simlocked, you are stuck with the sim card of the phone company you bought it from and paying roaming charges.  If that's the case, the best option is to download the map of interest at a WiFi hotspot...Starbucks, McDonalds, any HK government building.

#10 Post at 1-2-2010 21:58  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L I use GPS on my iPhone and here are some options, assuming that your iPhone is unlocked: a.) Get a local sim card with data access.  The Peoples prepaid cards do this.  I think it'll be on EDGE, but for GPS and mapping purposes it won't matter. b.) Install a GPS app with onboard maps and turn on the GPS (Location Services) on your iPhone.  Having onboard maps is very important because then the phone will load maps from your device rather than downloading.  I use TomTom and have the maps for Canada and Hong Kong & Macau.  Be warned that running a GPS and mapping app will use a lot of the iPhone's battery.  With TomTom running, the battery on my iPhone 3GS lasts under three hours. Your iPhone must be unlocked and it's not hard to get everything done, use GMDL (http://www.in7ane.com) to get the Google Map Cache and etc... Follow the steps from there. I utilize this option as well as the use of xGPS on my iPhone 3G. The searching for Address function may not work, but it's not hard to find the street name on the map and just walk on the street and find the right building etc..
