English only!

I'm sure this has been discussed but do you really need to know Cantonese? or Mandarin?  do most punters speak those languages?

from what i have been reading, it sounds like knowing Mandarin will greatly benefit a punter in the mainland.  Or having a local friend take you around too.

I think knowing Mandarin will take you a long ways when it comes to punting in China and HK.  Especially in China.  Cantonese would be helpful in HK and just a little bit in China.  I found that not many WG's speak or understand english too well which is a bit of a problem when you trying to explain to her what types of service you are looking for.  I guess hand gestures will just have to do.

It's a retail transaction. Just as in a store, the staff may or may not speak a bit of English, but you have money and they have product, and you'll figure out a way to communicate the details. Really not any different from asking whether you "need" to speak Chinese in order to shop in HK.

majority of WG's in China, macau, HK HG's only speak mandarin. English is "yes, no, thank you"Thats the little engish they know. So if you know mandarin, I can guarantee you will have a much much better time in terms of the GF experience and how they relate to you.

on THIS forum a very high % speak no Chinese and the majority know very little.  Heck you don't even have to open your mouth in ANY language if you don't want to.

Of course if you DO speak some chinese and make the effort, most times you'll get a better interaction.

But need it?  No way.

I'm not actually sure that you need it however it certainly helps. When I first got here I knew no Mandarin whatsoever and therefore any meeting I had with a WG were nothing more than a fuck. Since learning Mandarin I think my meetings have become alot more fun and the girl seems to interact a lelluva lot more.

You don't so much need to know the language since you can always make sure the girl understands what you want using gestures, etc.  But, as on poster mentions, it certainly improves the experience if you are able to chat with the girl and get to know her a bit.  Cantonese/Mandarin as languages are not as hard as people say ... have a go and take a class, or get a book.  You won't regret it.

Only need to know the language of love

On a serious note, yes best to learn mandarin rather than Cantonese to get better experiences since it's more widely spoken whilst providing more personal opportunities.

For the 141 HG's, some of the agents don't speak English so it would be difficult to schedule an appt in sign language over the phone.

I just can't see how you can get by in China punting-wise (or anything else for that matter) without knowing either Mandarin or Cantonese.  Even in HK where theoretically everyone speaks English, hard to arrange things with HG since as mentioned above, some of the agents don't do English.

Of course it is a bit harder, but it is possible to get by.  In some ways it may even make you a bit different?  But learning even a few phrases will really help to break the ice.

The real problem with Chinese, half the time the mainlanders don't understand each other, because of the differences between dialects of Mandarin chinese.  It's not that you say something but the tone which you say it with.

I've been visiting HK for the past three years, and each time I learn a bit more of the language, unfortunately during the long spell before I return, I tend to forget most of it. It is not difficult to get by when communicating with someone face to face, but, of course if you are trying to conduct a conversation via phone, you are pretty much at a loss if they only speak a local language. If you can find a local who speaks some English they will usually help with a quick phone translation. I have found cab drivers particularly helpful.

Well, seeing you guys having the Language Barrier, makes me feel really fortunate, being able to speak both Cantonese and Mandarin, IMO, being able to converse in the WG's language will greatly enhance the fun when having them in your room, otherwise, real awkward experience. Only smiling to each other!

yes and no

of course being able to converse is best of all

but NOT being able to converse means you get more skillful at body-language.  It's a different dimension that tends to get lost if you rely only on words.

You lost me here DArt BRO! Maybe it is just me, hence, I seldom play in BKK or HCMC nowadays, though I know a few words of Thai and Tieng Viet. Good one! Body-Language is enough?

That's not true at all. I've never met a Mainlander I couldn't converse with in Mandarin without any problem whatsoever. Trying to speak Mandarin to a HK'er, on the other hand, is still hit and miss.

As others have said, the biggest inconvenience of not knowing some dialect of Chinese is the difficultly sometimes encountered when trying to arrange a meeting with a Hotel Girl through her agent.

Beyond that, speaking Mandarin makes the encounters with the girls much more pleasant; not only is it more interesting to be able to chat with the girls, it also puts them at ease knowing they can communicate with you.

Why do you think Lockhart Rd. bars even exist?

It's because there ARE a lot of mongers here in Hong Kong who does NOt speak any Chinese.

They are basically forced to go to the Lockhart rd. bars as they just cannot manage anywhere else with their language deficiency.

And thus we have this anomaly of guys having to do Filipinos/Thais/Indonesians JUST BECAUSE these gals manage a bit of English - in a city chock-a-block full of nubile chinese gals!!  And paying thru the nose to partake of these imported gals!!

Do yourself a favor - pick up at least a bit of Chinese.

Do this and you'll probably get a bit more respect from the locals too BTW.
