3d Television system

I've heard they are coming out with a 3d home entertainment system for High Definition plasma screen TV's to use special glasses.  This is not the same as the old color flimsy 3d glass but some kind of technology for changing the blink ratio of each eye lens.  I'm sure they'll probably be stocking this somewhere in Hong Kong.  Anybody seen one of these systems yet?

technology is so incredible these days that they're coming up with new designs, gadgets, enhancements every couple months that it doesnt' even seem worth it to buy the latest technology anymore. Once you buy it, it's basically old technology cause 6 months down the road, new better toys will be out. But it does sound interesting though

I saw some video reports at a tech tradeshow, so the technology exists.

It basically works by wearing glasses that block one eye then the other, and interlacing the stereo images on the TV.  The shutters on the glasses are synchronised to the TV - you can see a cable running between the two.

... probably still needs some R&D to perfect it, but we're probably not far from being able to watch Avatar and Journey To The Center Of The Earth at home.

Sounds good to me, but they've got to make the tech wireless. If they could do it without glasses it'd be even better.

Good news for Playstation owners, every single PS3 will be automatically updated to play 3D movies on Bluray, and play 3D games. Sweet! No need to buy a new player

I can't wait to see some of Maria's movies in 3d bluray!

True.  But for the forseeable future it's going to need some sort of glasses.  The only way to simulate 3D is by presenting a different image to each eye, which means you either have to have glasses to control what reaches each eye, or have two separate screens that are as close to your eyes as glasses need to be (i.e. in a pair of goggles, like some early VR headsets did).

To have a single screen showing a 3D image without needing glasses would require a level of control over the direction of light leaving the screen that's beyond even the realm of science fiction at this time ...

... so this generation of tech is headed towards the wireless glasses as the next step.

I bet some street vendor in Hong Kong probably is carrying a ripped off version of the 3d glass somewhere already.  I've heard Hong Kong street vendors carry video games, and toys made from everywhere.  So after Tokyo the latest goods would be in Hong Kong.

I believe that these TV's were just introduced at the CES Show in Las Vegas.  Reports have said that they will be released sometime this year.  But the down side to it is the cost of the glasses.  Some manufacturers are only including 1 pair of 3d glasses and any additional ones have to be purchased for something like $100USD each.

There is a really cool TV out by Samsung with 3D technology, I believe its the 9000 series.  Check it out its super nice.

yes, i heard it is going to be very expensive, as any new technology.

I just saw the movie avatar in 3D, what a good movie, but very unimpressed with the 3D.

I would not buy a 3D television for many years to come.  I dont think the tech has been perfected enough to make much a difference.

I think I would rather see the movies in 2D, mot much difference in my oppinion.

my guess is that 3-D still has a decade to go before it will enter mainstream media. There are just a lot of issues with pricing that needs technology to catch up with before it can be easily accessible to the public.

I like to think 3d is a step toward better television.  If there is no market for different kinds of TV, than nobody is going to develop the hologram systems.  I personally would like to see the holodeck be developed.

They don't know what to issue now we have the 3D TV.
I think that you will need to pay for DVD or Blueray that have the multiple angle shot to do the 3D.
I doubt that you can see general TV show in 3D and I don't really see the point.

I saw on a tv program that ESPN in the US will be the first to start broadcasting in 3D, it's already in the works.

Did the ESPN have any reports where to buy the new 3d equipment in the US?  I would it come with the cable boxes or sattalite tv as a package?

I know in the UK that Sky TV HD decoders will be upgradable to 3D.  I guess a lot of decoders/set-top boxes will be upgradable via firmware

I don't see any reason why normal HD TVs can't play 3D video though, as long as they run at a high enough framerate.  For example, HK digital TV runs at 50Hz, so you'd need 100Hz for 3D.  Any 100 or 120Hz+ screens should theoretically work for most video broadcasts.

Surely you'd just need a device to sync your decoder image with the glasses

But then again, knowing the tech companies, they'll probably make an official "3D Ready" standard and forget to apply it to TVs already on the market, so that they can drive sales of new devices
