Try different combinations of flights,

Ie a guy in Beijing wanted to go to Sapporro, the direct flight was £560, I told him to go via Seoul and to book through a Korean travel agency, it ended up costing him £50 to fly to Seoul, then £120 to fly to Sapporo from Seoul.

This avoided Russian airspace fees I think.

fares

Dec fares are at the highest untl Jan 10th or so when fare are off peak.
Try a Chinese agent and ask for UA, NW or Canadian carriiers.  These agents buy their tickets from consolidators who then pass the savings on to the consumers.  Sing, Cathay, China, EVA are noramlly higher probably due to the weak US $.

Good luck

End of december from usa is ALWAYS very expensive.  Its like peak season in term of fare. there is no way around it unless you change your dates or do loads of connecting flights.

Alright bro...I am in the UK and i managed to book a cheapish flight to HK already...The prices of the airfares change all the time..( Companies competing against each other..) That's how i got my lower airfare..( The airfares have rocketed again..) Another way to get a cheap flight is to wait until the last minute...It all depends on how flexible you are with your dates..

1. Try calling some of the travel agents in NYC Chinatown. The Chinese agents seem to get the better deals. I've had luck with the ones in San Francisco's Chinatown.

2. I've also used a Japanese travel agency in LA. Try http://www.gatewaylax.com
Try different combinations of non-stop vs. one-stop, as well as choosing a specific airline. China Airlines via Taipei will often be the cheapest.

Last I checked it was about 850ish for Cathay and 800ish for Continental.  I would take Cathay over continental anyday! better food, better chairs, much better entertainment and don't need to go to Jersey to fly.  Either way its 15.5 hours, I would NEVER take anything NOT direct flight anymore, way too spoiled now.  I'll pm you the place where I saw the prices.

nah, its usually not cheaper in nyc chinatown.

You can try china air (not a fav of mines by far). or take a group tour which tends to be cheaper. then just extend your stay there which I have done in the past.

It is impossible to beat NYC Chinatown price to Hong Kong, this I guarantee you.  I can fly out via Cathay direct flight tomorrow at 10am if I wanted and would pay under 900 right now.  Find me a better deal ANYWHERE!  NYC Chinatown buys up these tickets in bulk and shared throughout Chinatown, prices are pretty much almost identical anywhere you go in Chinatown, unless you know them like I do, then you can get 10 bucks off at most.  Believe me, I have checked every nook and cranny and you can not beat Chinatown.  As for Korea or China air? Fuck them... 25 hours flying and waiting is not fucking fun, to save a few bucks?  You must be outta your mind if you are going to take layover planes, there is a reason why there are so many direct flights to HK now, people rather go that route than stop at anchorage, LAX and or Japan or seul.

I retract my earlier statement as I must be brainfarting. nyc chinatown is the cheapest but its a few dollars here & there; not a lot.

I totally agree that its far better just paying a tad more for Cathay.  yes why save a few small dollars to torture yourself for such a long haul flight.  I just threw that option in case the OP really wanted to save at all cost.  I have a few friends who actually connected as mucha s 4x to save $. I personally think its insane but some people rationalize that its worth it.

It all depends on how much you can save. For US$1000+, I'll connect 4 times.

I recall meeting a gal who was on the same flight with me returning to the US. She had to fly from Bali to Columbus, Ohio. So here was her route:

1. Bali to Jakarta
2. Jakarta to TPE on China Air
3. TPE to SFO
4. SFO to ATL on Delta
5. ATL to Columbus on Delta

I think the travel time and layovers came out to be almost 2 full days.
