you probably should narrow down the area and cuisine - since as they say, the Cantonese people are the best at food.

The Grand Hyatt has a awesome BBQ and seafood buffet on the roof top beside the pool over looking the harbour, very romantic if you bring a date. I think the price is around 600 HKD.

But really like Jesun said you have to be more specific in cuisine and price range HK has so many restaurants you can probably eat at a different place everyday for a year.

I've heard there's some spicy Typhoon Shelter Crab that's suppose to be very delicious under the bridge.  Let's hope that's the only crabs you get while in HK!

Typhoon Shelter crab is served in many restaurants nowadays.  In Shanghai and in other cities, there's a big chain restaurant called Bi Feng Tang (translated to typhoon shelter in Mandarin) that serves Cantonese-style food, with the option of eating in a "typhoon shelter".

the word for crab in Cantonese is a near homoynm for the vulgar Cantonese word for pussy, so eating crab can be a good thing!

If you fancy western food, favorite place for me for a good meal is the Outback Restaurant near Tsim Sha Joy (East) MTR. Great for steaks potatoes (all kinds) and ribs. Its Austrailian but the HK people seem to love it there too

Wanna eat pussy - its everywhere mate!

Make sure you hit up this place:

山窿謝記魚蛋 Shan Loon Tse Kee Fish Ball
http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/sr2.htm?shopid=3086

This is an institution in Aberdeen (香港仔); they've got excellent fishballs & noodles made from fish caught at by local fishermen.

I'll be staying in TST at hotel nikko.

Any good recs for breakfast places nearby for congee (jok) + fried bread (canto: you zhaa gwei mando: you tiao)?

dont mind traveling for seafood, where is best seafood in hk?

they still have roast geese right? (they only have duck in the states) but i suppose any local place should have roast geese + rice.

also any recommendation for best "canto" food? you know like staple canto dishes like dry beef chow mein (canto: gong chow ow huo), etc.

I should really type this in chinese =)

For the best goose, go to Yung Kee restaurant on Wellington street in central.

Seafood - why not travel to Lamma Island as it's reasonably priced and quality is good!

When you come from anywhere but Hk or China, the food in HK is the best.  The worst food in HK is better than the best food in overseas chinatowns hands down!  When I am in HK, I like to eat as much street food as possible, stinky tofu, mini cakes, fresh squeezed drinks, various herbal teas, bubble tea, japanese dough balls with sauce and bonita flakes, spicy fish balls, my favorite huilaushan, ....  then I also like the roasted meats, dunno why but HK roast pork is soooo damn tender!  I will do the occasional MCd because I will hanker for it, but don't forget to try the green tea sundae with red beans or the side of corn that we don't have in the states.  For dinner, I like to do dai pai dong, either on temple street or the few in MK.  And of course, I will have the all out seafood dinners at almost any restaurant.  I can just close my eyes and point at any restaurant and it is guaranteed to be better than the crap we get here in NYC.  I purposely starve myself to lose 10 lbs before heading to HK or China since I know I am going to put on weight when I get there.  Favorite dai pai dong eats?   Spicy crab, clams with black bean sauce, half shrimp with garlic, steamed eel, intestines in hot sauce, gorn chow beef hor, i could go on forever... damn i want to get back to HK for some food right about now.

For breakfast, i really like that place someone mentioned before coral de cafe, congee, turnip cake, tea with milk...... YUM!  Typical food for southern chinese. Even fast food in hk is better than any food here in NYC.

TW (Tsui Wah) for all HK style food - breakfast, milk tea, curry beef brisket and fish ball noodles is good.

Even the cafeteria style HK style food is good - Cafe de coral, MX and that other one.

I also agree with sexpert with the Dai pai dong - especially the ones on temple street.  If you see one that is busy at all times - its busy for a reason - its good and cheap.  Hell everything is good in HK.

Food, girls, whores et al!

that may or may not be true anymore.  Many of the high-end chefs left HK pre-1997 to Vancouver, San Francisco, Sydney, Toronto, et al.  I would dare say that I've been in restaurants in Vancouver and (less in) San Francisco, both big and small, that rival HK easily.  Unfortunately NYC's Chinatown is overrun by all the illegal Fukien immigrants who know nothing about cooking.

Everything is good and cheap about HK - until you go to SZ and compare.  But then again, SZ hardly has any Cantonese speakers anymore except for all the Chiu Chow salespeople over at the huge mall next to the Luohu train station.

De Coral and Fairwood are not too bad for a quick meal (i think De Coral fairs better).

What about tim sum bros? Where do they serve some good tim sum (without the crowd)?

i think the famous typhoon shelter place is literally called "under bridge spicy crab" and its on lockhart or jaffe by where wanchai ends and causeway bay begins.

for hotpot, i'd suggest yau gwat hei (google search), or golden valley in the emperor hotel in happy valley (there is also a KTV with take-out available in the basement).

would not suggest eating Typhoon Shelter crab before a 'date' all that spices & garlic won't sit well
I personally prefer the 'pissing shrimp/pawn' (literal translation)

dim sum is a must, almost every restaurant has it
