No cell phone

I will only be in HK an evening coming and going to the mainland.
I really dont want to buy a cell phone for such a short stay.
My question is,is it possible to visit the girls hotel without using a cell phone to get instructions?
I was hoping I could just get the information with my first call to the papa from my hotel.
Maybe this is not possible and I will just have to have them come to my hotel which probably limits my chance of getting the gal I want.
Thanks

The papa will always ask you to call again when you get to the hotel. You can ask to use a phone in the hotel loobby or ask if they have a pay phone. Hotel staff are usually very helpful, especially if you look like a visitor.

don't you need a cellphone on the mainland?  If so, your only cost would be a prepaid SIM which would set you back say $70HKD.

just get a prepaid SIM card. if you going to be in HK and the mainland, you can consider getting
the "2 in 1" SIM card offered by China Mobile. with one SIM card, you get both a mainland and a HK
number. so when you are in HK and make a call, your HK number will be displayed. on the mainland,
your mainland number will be displayed. very handy.

recharge cards are readily available in both HK and China. you get 90-180 days validity on your SIM card
numbers each time you recharge. if you are going to be in this part of the world often, i highly recommend
getting this.

the 2 in 1 offered by China Mobile doesn't really have great rates, especially when you're in HK.  If you're traveling back and forth a lot, I would recommend getting a dual SIM phone, and just getting two prepaid SIMs, one from HK, one from China.  The rates are better. Or just flip back and forth between the two SIMs.  The dual SIM phone is awesome - back home in the US, I have one, which is my regular phone number that everyone knows, and one for mongering, which I use to call/receive calls to/from mamasans.

I have thought of getting a dual sim card - dual standby phone for a trip to the states.  Friends have told me that these phones are power hogs and will breakdown within a year.  What has your experience been with these no-name China-designed dual sim-dual standby phones?  Can you recommend a brand?

THANKS bro's
yeah I am a bit of a cheap fuck,
Yeah I have a cell phone, its locked.I guess I could get the damn thing unlocked and get me one of the sim cards you guys recommend.
Probably be easier than asking the hotel people to use the phone.hahaha
I do have my phone activated to be used anyplace in the world but it does cost a shit load if you do use it much.
Yeah it seems I go 3 times a year so I guess I will get my cheap ass   set up better.
Thanks again

I have an iPhone clone which has a dual SIM - CECT P168C, that I got earlier last year for around $400RMB.  Pretty comparable to a 2G phone, so I'm reasonably satisfied with it.  I'm one of those types that typically switches phones every year, so not sure about whether or not it will break down.  (currently using a different phone now with no dual sim).  Battery life is pretty good too (can get about a day and a half with say 30 minutes of talking for the day), and the battery is even removable, so I have an extra battery for it (unlike the regular iPhone, whose battery cannot be pulled out).

Many of the phones from China and HK are dual SIM, so you shouldn't have a problem finding one.

Wow, only $400RMB! Then this phone is worth the purchase as my per minute roaming charges are so high that sometimes when I get a call from HK in the states I try to guess if the call is business or not to minimize my final bill.

Thanks for the recommendation and review.  Would it be better to buy at HK Computer Mall or Apliu Street - Shamshuipo (these are the places I saw these phones)?

Try Sin Tat Shopping Centre on Argyle Street in Mongkok. This shopping mall is devoted to mobile phones.

I got mine at an electronics mall in SZ - Futian off of Shennan Road by the HuaQiang MTR entrance.  However, Lee Ka Shing got his hands on the property, so the whole mall disappeared now as new buildings are going up.

Sin Tat is a pretty decent place...shitloads of phone places up and down Sai Yeung Choi Street in MK.

is your phone already unlocked from your service provider? if thats the case,
try looking on ebay for the dual sim card attachment clip. its this little gadget that
fits into your standard sim card area and provides 2 slots for 2 sim cards. if i remember
correctly, i have seen it going on ebay for quite a low price (around 4.99 GBP if i recall) a
few months back.

I know the gadget you are talking about.  It allows a normal phone to use 2 sims, but only 1 at a time, not simultaneously.

It is not the same as using a dual simcard - DUAL STANDBY phone whereby both sims are simultaneously active and ready to receive and make phone calls.  This type of phone basically is 2 separate phones in 1 body which allows me to answer a call on the 2nd sim while talking on the 1st sim.  But because it is really 2 separate phones in one, I was concerned that its power consumption would be so high that the battery life would not last a full day.  JeSun's post clarify the battery issue for me.

if you're going to go for an iPhone clone, keep in mind that there are dozens of brands and variations, but none that matches the original 3G itself (not yet, anyways).

Yes I did a little searching and can actually buy this card and have it mailed to my home.Shit I will be set and ready to go.
Also if I want I can get a phone for $60 + 36 shipping,it has a card pre-installed with a little time on it.
Probably just get my phone unlocked and not have to pack another phone around when traveling.

what i did was unlock my phone and its good to  go in most countries! So i get off the plane and just get the local prepaid card and load it into my mobile. The cost isn't that high considering that i don't usually stay beyond a week. But yeah, i just got one of those dual sim cards attachments off ebay today myself. Useful if i need to remain contactable when on foreign shores at my usual number.
