Apologies if this has been asked and answered, but I did a search on post titles (at my

What does "c-hing" (or "ching") mean?

Is it pronounced "see-hing" or "ching", as in pinyin "jing"?

Pronounced as spelt "c hing"...It's more of a cantonese word than mandarin.

it doesn't really mean brother either, is more like a mentor. a experience monger taking a out a newbie around town showing where everything is will be consider a c hing. hing dai mean brother if anything

In the Chinese martial art world, a c-hing is a male apprentice under the same master as you, and who is older than you, or at least began learning from the master before you. It's a kind of term of respect and is used a lot over on the Chinese forum.

Probably a dumb question, but can a westerner call a Chinese guy "a Ching", or is its use limited to those who are Chinese?
