the term 141

I was chatting with a taxi driver the other day and I was talking about "141" with him and he has no clue what I'm saying.  Then he goes OHHH "yut law yut" or something (i may be wrong).  Do most HK locals NOT know the term to be "141"?  What is the most understood term for it?  Was it what I quoted him saying?

Yat Lau Yat = "one floor one"

Rest assured, HK people DO know what it means ... but they may have to mentally switch gears from hearing the words, to hearing the sounds, it's just lost in translation.

Even fluent English speakers will hardly ever use the English version without mentally translating it it into Chinese.  "one floor one" sounds a lot like "one four one" to us, but nothing at all like "yat sei yat" which is the chinese translation of "one four one".

the taxi drivers are pretty clued up ... I was in one going from my hotel in TST to another hotel in Jordan and he laughingly commented "you going to have good afternoon tea!". I was thinking damn strange thing to say and then realised he knew exactly what I was planning for "afternoon tea".  Others have said "why don't you go to Mong Kok, much cheaper!" .... I'm like WTF, have I got condoms hanging out of my pocket or something??

HAHA. So, taxi drivers are informed. This thread makes me wander how the term 141 came about in the first place.

that's been covered a few times.  No, make that many times

It's a reference to the law in HK, that prostitution is legal as long as it is one girl in her own apartment, i.e. "one floor one girl".

ah, but is it not a universal truth that whatever the country, whatever the language, if you want to go get some pussy your first source must always be a local cab driver?

Yes in HK it is legal for one girl to work for herself out of one stand-alone room i.e. 2 or more girls in one room illegal, 2 or more girls in a multi bedroom apartment illegal, brothels illegal, pimps illegal.

Regarding cab drivers I don't really trust them, although the HK ones seem okay. Some will just take you to a place because they get commission, and commission may be higher for place with aunties and pork chops. In some countries you may end up getting mugged or taken someplace that is dangerous to be stranded in e.g. Mexico is infamous for bogus cabs.

IMO the internet is the best tool we've ever had.

There's even a Chinese restaurant named 141 (Chinese wording) in Shenzhen - close to Queens Spa. Not bad if you're in that area for a quick snack and want to see hooker alley. One of my local bros said it had some affliation with this site???

161 vs 141

Cantonese people in HK obviously know the term "one floor one". In Cantonese, the term is pronounced "yat lau yat", which sounds like "161" (hence the name of that other website). "141" just sounds like the term in English.

"Yat lau yat" sounds like "161"
"One floor one" sounds like "141"

Saying "161" in English to a Cantonese taxi driver means nothing and doesn't sound like anything... You need to say it in Cantonese!

Saying "141" in both English and Cantonese ("yat say yat") will be useless, so don't bother!

Any anyway, why would you want to say this to a taxi driver anyway? Wouldn't you be saying the name of the address instead!?!?!

I was riding the taxi from Hung Hom station to my HK apartment.  I wasn't going for sex.    It was just a casual conversation which started out about how he (the taxi driver) was bragging about having a lot of girlfriends in China.

That's very good to know that it's legal.  Is advertising of the services legal?  As for the taxi topic, I've answered it in my previous post.

To be 100% clear you can read up the law here ...

Needs a bit of interpretation since most of it is about what is NOT allowed, so you have to read between the lines to figure out what IS allowed.

Broadly speaking making money obtained through someone else's prostitution is illegal, and various underage acts are prohibited, but the act of exchanging money in return for a sexual act with your own body is not prohibited.

I've been thinking about it and my guess is they steer clear of trouble by keeping girls off the premises and sending you out to the "hotel next door" where you can effectively be with the girl in private.  Hence the split charge - they really are sailing as close to the wind as they can.  Actually more of an issue for the establishment than for the punter, but it's not a business model that I'd want to have my own name associated with ...
