Where to stay in HK?

Wow!

This is the best forum ever :-)

I'll be going to Hong Kong (for the first time) next week. I have made a reservation for a few nights at a youth hostel (I'm not exactly rich) but now I'm beginning to think that a hotel room would suit me better. Is there anyone that can give me some advise about a cheap place to stay (that also would allow me to bring girls to the room)?

How/where do I find English speaking girls? Hope that you all have a really good time in HK!! //MMG

Ps. Is there are any monger-brother who would like to meet up for a beer in HK at the end of next week? Please send a mail to muchmoregold@yahoo.com

How much are you willing to spend per night?  That is the question.  For me, I found that my local travel agent in NYC was able to get me much better rates on a VERY GOOD hotel.  I think the norm was something like 1200hkd a night, I managed to get it for about 550hkd per night after twisting his arm a bit to get better pricing from the wholesalers.  Don't know where you are from but if you are from NYC, I Could always intro my travel agent to you.

Well, I live in Europe and I can't afford to pay more then 300 hkd per night (I'd like to put as much money as possible on the girls) :-)

Thanks a lot for the help though!

300HKD a night? mmmm...I think you will be struggling. HKG is not known for cheap hotels.

You would have to stay in the holes in MK if you want to pay that little.  Or... you could always overnight with locals every night you are in HK, that way you get all you can eat and a place to stay! LOL...

If you are willing to go a little higher (~HKD 600-700 a night, sorry I did see your price limitation but think that may be tough for a hotel rather than hostel), emperor hotel in happy valley may not be bad.  google it for the site.  they have a pretty (pricey) (sketchy) KTV downstairs - so think they should generally be okay with bringing girls upstairs..

have a good time!

I can't think of any hotel that fits your budget of $300 per night.

What is your budget for girls ?

If you want to take girls back to your room, it'll cost you more then if you visit their rooms or apartments.

I don't think you know how mongering works in HK, suggest you read more threads in the HK reports and
Q & A section.

This question is posted in the wrong section ... moving this to Q & A

  ...

Don't some of the guest-houses run at that sort of rate?  New Lucky Building certainly used to have a number of (reputable and clean) places at $200 ... some were listed in Lonely Planet ... my info is not exactly recent though.

Not going to mention Chungking mansions here   that's really going too low ... but if money really is tight it's worth staying in a cheap place just to have more budget for the girls

Guest houses yes, but not hotels - for that budget.

If this is your first visit to HK then be prepared for a shock when you see your youth hostel. Youth Hostels in HK are very very different from their counterparts in the EU.  If unlucky you will be sharing a room with 6 other guests, no privacy, security and well the rooms are shit as most YH are in run down urban buildings, land is not cheap in HK.  300 HKD a night wont get you much, unless you are prepared to live in a closet.  You wont find the best deals online either, they can make the ugliest shit hole in HK look like the Peninsula.  The price is the best indicator of the quality of the place dont be lured in by cheap prices and gorgeous photos.  It will cost atleast 700 HKD for anything that you will feel comfortable to live in.  But look on the good side the girls are CHEAP in HK!!

Dude

That's an unrealistic budget for staying in HK. If you are planning on staying in the TST area the lowest
budget hotels would be the Regal Kowloon, Ramada and the Park Hotel. All about $700 HKD per night.

My advise is to make up the budget shortfall when you return to EU and enjoy yourself while you are here.
You DON'T want to stay in Chungking mansions unless you want Indian or Black pussy. ( although it is all
pimk inside ).

Spend the money on the room and take the MTR to the better budget areas.

Expensive HK accomodation

Everyone has said it. HK is really expensive for temporary accomodation. Also mid-long term is expensive unless you are willing to live far away from civilisation.

One option you might want to consider is couch surfing. It is a new-ish concept where people lend you a mattress or a couch for free during your stay. I have not brought a WG to my flat since a year so unless you want absolutely bar pick-ups that are normally maids or live with their parents, the pros will provide the bed to fck in. So you do not need to worry too much about not being able to bring back girls.

Also who knows.. maybe you will find a fellow punter as your couch surfing host!

Hi everyone!

First of all, apologies for putting my inquiry in the wrong forum. twiceAweek: Thank you for moving to the right one.

Secondly, it is my first time in HK. Clearly I haven’t done my homework about the costs of staying in a hotel properly. The question now is if I should stay at my Hostel (and go to different brothels) or rent a room (for about 700 hkd)...

Please don’t hesitate to write down any further input you might have.

(Btw, please let me know if you have any other suggestions what a 35 year old tourist should to while staying in HK)

okay i think the cheapest decent hotel i found is the Regal Kowloon, around 500HKD per night. it may be a bit above ur budget but i think there is many WG's staying there, correct me brothers if i am wrong but that is the cheapest decent hotel i found for u, if u want something cheaper not hotel but hostel type very small room there's a YWCA maybe better for u.

Even better u can try looking at this website www.hotels.com give u a selection of cheap hotels but u take the risk, best ask other brothers what they think of the hotel before booking.

LOL... I was looking up the regal kowloon and found a hilarious review on trip advisor:

“Prostitutes at the door”
Regal Kowloon Hotel
Save Review
2 of 5 stars
SydneyNC 3 contributions
Asheville, NC

Brought our graduate students here after liking it the past two years. Never again. The management must have changed because the service has taken a nose dive and the rates were up. Problems kept popping up: breakfast that was to be included that kept getting billed; assigning students to smoking rooms and refusing to find them another until I stated we'd move them to another hotel; hard beds, and so on. The final straw was the prostitutes knocking on our students' doors, they were going down the hallway looking for someone to invite them into their room! I didn't even bother to ask how the 'ladies' got into the hotel in the first place.

LOL.. priceless, I think you found the perfect gem!

I can't find any good reason why you would want the girls to come back to your room !
You just visit them at ther place ... walk ups and hotel girls don't charge extra for use of their rooms !

I have to jump in again ...

yes, you can see HK as a place where you have to spend lots of money.  That's what most establishments WANT you to think, so no surprise it's the predominent view expressed in this thread too.

The REALITY is HK is a place of extremes, with only a vague relationship between price and value.  You can go to an expensive place that's shit, and right next to it is an excellent place that's cheap.

This means, more than in other cities in the world:-
  1. research pays off handsomely.  You typically only have to talk to 3 or 4 providers to start finding much better value.
  2. have the balls to negotiate.  Even the $700+ places discount heavily.  Except at peak periods (typically when there's a trade show) when all rooms are full, you can get late-check-in rates, special deals, and other discounts.

In a similar way, guest-houses are a great alternative to hotels, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.  Yes lots of them are shit-holes, but it really doesn't take much effort to find one that's clean and well-run, with a private bathroom, 24-hr security, etc. and for the savings it's well worth the time it takes.  There are plenty out there.

Good luck!!
