Mainland quarantine

This week have seen some reports in the mainland media about arrangements being considered for travellers to the mainland being able to serve their quarantine in Hong Kong.

I will monitor and report if any further developments.

Many mainlander already using Hong Kong as transit point today.  On a recent flight from Hong Kong to US, at least half of flights are from mainland.

Special arrangements for HK students to go to the mainland and for certain business card holders.

Slowly but surely China will open up - hopefully.

Let's hope prices and availability are in our favour when they do normalise

Relaxation of Covid restrictions in mainland

Current news in the mainland indicates a relaxation of the restrictive policies for Covid. How far these will go is not yet known.
Hopefully will lead to less entry restrictions.
Of course, with the winter approaching, Covid and flu may become more prevalent so what reaction the government will do then is not known.

Further quarantine changes

Mainland quarantine changes for entry are changing again, shorter periods soon to apply together with predeparture testing changes.

Best to check with Chinese embassy or consulate or other Chinese government source to confirm the requirements for where you are headed in China.

Testing will depend on where you are departing from and local quarantine in China may also be dependant on where you are departing from and any Covid cases amongst your fellow passengers.

There are also changes mooted to quarantine and isolation rules during an outbreak, very much a local decision on that.

More changes on the mainland.

Less mass testing, vaccination campaign, freer movement including into and out of Beijing.

Can expect many more cases of Covid over the next few months.

No word yet on a general lifting of visa issue to enter China but maybe not a good time to visit if cases of Covid rise too much.

So China seems prepared to fully open up soon. Even if they did open up, it would be way too hot to visit China now. Even if you think COVID isn't a big deal, it can be to an older population who aren't vaxxed at all, especially around a mass migration event like CNY.

The pessimist in me says that we won't return to normal in China until April at the latest.

According to mainland authorities travel to China without post-arrival quarantine will be possible from 8 January.

The requirements for pre travel vaccination and testing was not mentioned, neither was the availability of visas in various countries.

Another problem will be availability of airline seats whilst airlines ramp up to possible extra demand

Forceholy's post is most applicable, caution is most appropriate

Some updates:

Hong Kong is following suit in dropping most to all travel restrictions. Masking is still mandated indoors.

Many countries are going to implement testing requirements and/or quarantines if you travel from China:

India, Korea, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan

Still no word on China issuing tourist visas.

The big news of all of this is the resumption of issuance of endorsements for mainlanders to come to HK for business and tourism purposes (7 day) and the ease to return overland without quarantine.  That means a greater supply flow from the mainland, though it too may be a bit slow to resume if there is individual hesitation to travel - though it almost seems everyone in the country will already have been infected by the time the border reopens two weeks later

Mainland border now open, apparently 60,000 allowed from HK each day, no quarantine from any country but best to check if pre departure test is still required for particular countries.

In summary - border open but check visa and any other requirements

Free for all ....let the girls come

Looks like from Feb 6th/7th ALL restrictions will be dropped to cross border, along with Lowu, Lok Ma Chow border crossings fully opened.
No tests either way hopefully (not yet confirmed)

Later news:

No testing required China to HK
HK - China - no testing required IF you have been in HK for 7 or more days.

I'm in the mainland right now. So does this mean I need a test if I go to HK, then return to the mainland before 7 days?

You need PCR test for going to China only if you have visited other country (other than HK) within 7 days before you enter China.
