It costs $88 for the SIM card and local calls are 0.10 per minute. You can use the SIM card in your existing phone.

#4 Post at 16-5-2010 15:49  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Reply #1 cherryhunter's post It is correct as has been said, all you need is a pre paid SIM readily available from any 7/11 etc. HK$68 for the card inc a small amount of stored value and recharge amounts available in multiples of HK$100. However if your phone is locked to your local network at home, you will likely need a phone as well. Best solution is to go to a Fortress store (major electrical retailer in HK) and buy a cheap phone. You can usually get an unlocked Motorola or Samsung phone for HK$100 - $150. A worthwhile investment for this and subsequent trips.

Depending on what type of phone you already have, you might not need to get a temporary phone. You will need a phone with GSM 1800 band  or at less triband in China / HK. #6 Post at 16-5-2010 17:22  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L a few months ago, practically all the cell phone stores had this really cheap unlocked duo-band samsung which sold for $100HKD.  It will work in HK/China and will serve its purpose.  If you want hte triband version (so that it will work in teh uS) it will cost an extra $50HKD. simcards can be bought anywhere, but you might as well get it from the place thats sellin ghte phone lol.. so at least you can confirm everything is working on the spot.

Around 100- 200 you can purchase a new phone. Most US phones will have to be unlocked. You always want 2 phones. It's easier to communicate and no records.

#8 Post at 17-5-2010 04:09  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Like the other bro's mentioned above, just make sure that your phone runs the same GSM band as in HK.  If your phone is locked to your local carriers network, just call up your local carrier and tell them that you are going overseas and want to bring your phone with you.  Unless you are with AT&T in the US and have an iPhone, the service rep will either send you the code to unlock your phone or walk you through the steps of unlocking it.  But only if you are on a carrier that uses GSM phones.  If your phone is running CDMA, it won't work unless it's a world phone and has GSM capability. Having a 2nd phone is good, especially if it's a cheapie phone that you don't mind destroying or losing.  However it's just as easy to delete all records on a phone that you are already familiar with

Not as discrete as just buying a PP SIM though.

Did you check with your hotel?  The hotel I stay let me borrow their mobile phone for free as long as i buy the sim card from  them.  The sim card price was either 68 or 98 HK dolllar.
