going and staying in HK

Hi planing a solo trip to HK mid February, please entertain my general questions. I will stay for a week, 3 days I will visit with friends the rest of the time is my own. The city seems very friendly for tourists compared my home base, NYC.

I can get a Continental flight for 800 out of Newark witch seems to be the cheapest, or  from 100-200 more I can get a flight out of JFK on Cathay Pacific or some other Asian airline. Is the foreign product so much better? My main concerns are legroom- I am very tall, in flight entertainment- its a long flight, and the food and service.

Where should I stay? HK island is my best choice? or there are better more central areas?

You can request airlines to give you special or modified seats to accomodiate your height,
sumo wrestlers have special seats put on the plane when they travel, and I'm sure you can request the same with
additional cost.

Please read the FAQ in the getting started section ... HK is a very small place with a fantastic network of
public transport, one doesn't need to be in a central location but if you must be in a 'central' location then
Central on HK island or TST would be the place.

Get the Cathay flight, the trolly dollies are excellent eye candy, also stay up all night and book an emergency exit row, Simon my absolute cunt of a mate managed to get 2 phone numbers and email addresses on a Cathay flight, he got another one enroute to Korea as well.

Life is short very...

Alright bro... I think you are trying to do research like me..  There is no better place for priceless , unlimited information about HK and Macau than here on this forum....
So you will have four days just to yourself.. I have done my research on hotels in HK already and will be staying in Tsuen Wan..( Convention center..Beautiful 5 star hotel....Panda hotel isn't bad either...) Best time to go in February is just after 14/02..( One week after chinese New year ..) The hotel prices should plummet...( I reckon around 400 to 500 hk dollars a night..)
Have you consided going to Macau..

you can ring the airline up to pre book seats as being tall it can be classed as a disability for the seat requests. failing that then look at www.seatguru.com to see which airlines offer the best leg room and request that seat.

hope it helps

i flew cathay last time to HK and it was awesome.
i concur on the stewardess. very hot! and they have unlimited snacks (instant noodle, etc)
I am also planning another trip back in march.

Continental is about 200-300 usd cheaper. I was thinking of going with the cheaper option.
does continental have movies on demand in coach like cathay?

Continental is sort of like cathay but the lcd screens are not as nice, the games and movies are not even close to quality, the food is disastrous, I think I've seen a fat american stewardess on one flight.

Cathay on the other hand, always has nice slim stewardesses to look at, heck even the guys are attractive.  Food is impressive for airplane food, like you said, unlimited snacks but more importantly, unlimited LIQUOR!  I remember the first time flying cathay, I got a pretty good cup of vodka, I was gonna give her 5 bucks... what they normally charge for a little bottle, but she gave me the oddest look as if I were nuts.  Funny thing was my neighbors didn't know either until i told them, we ended up getting a really good buzz throughout the whole flight.  Got to HK and fell right to sleep, absolutely ZERO jetlag.

Try ctrip.com or asiatravel.com to book accomodation.   They normally have special deals,  Butterfly chain of hotels offer booutique minimalist style hotels at reasonable prices, one in TST and the other located near Wanchai.

Everything associated with airline travel sucks big time! Getting to the airport, the airport itself, the long night-of-the-living-dead spent crammed into a tiny seat next to some guy who seems to fart for a living, the jet lag on the other end - it all sucks. The first time I flew it was exciting, but that rapidly got old.

Go with Cathay Pacific. Best airline EVER BAR NONE. I've been to HK 10 times now and all of the flights are on Cathay Pacific. Food is good, movies are new, seats are decent, comfortable.

From UK Cathay is defo the best for this part of the world.   I came on Virgin Atlantic this time - seats far too small - too narrow. Flight entertainment was full of adverts for Virgin. Food poor! etc etc

Avoid the flight from Uk that stops off at Mumbai - the indians will confiscate any alcool you take from Heathrow!

Flew with Cathay for a long time but since this year the food has really gone downhill - plain menu, little effort with presentation etc

Probably just a slight cost-cutting with the economy but Dragonair was good - with equally hot stewardesses too

Fly United, They Really Suck

Fly United, they really suck, and who doesn't like a good suck?
1.  The have the biggest, fattest stewardesses with the baddest attitudes and you know that sucks.
2.  The meals are like sloppy seconds, and nothing sucks harder than sloppy seconds.
3.  The aircraft interiors are old and wornout just like MK8 and where can you get more of a suck than MK8?
4.  There's practically no entertainment except what you bring yourself (O.K., so you can't suck yourself off but there's nothing wrong with a self-administered HJ every now and then).
5.  Every single seat will be full, and what's more fun than an orgy that sucks?
6.  The ticket price is one of the most expensive, and in the land of suck you get what you pay for!

Definitely United, all the way!

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.
