It's the 20th aniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacres.  See...  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989

It may be the best possible time to go.  My guess is that the police will be on guard for civil disobedience of quite a different form.

Have fun, CGP

It would appear they would mostly be concerned with the demonstrations and such.  IF there is one thing the Chinese government has learned is not to feed the opposition.  A crackfown on 6.4 would likely be a very, very bad thing for them.  On 6.5, it means nothing.

Sort of like coming to the US and doing building demolition on 9.11 - not a good idea.

I agree with Cal on that they will focus more on civil disobedience. Doesn't make sense that they'll increase their raids when the day is about the Tiananmen Square massacres. BTW did China ever apologize about it?

Apologise? They hardly even admitted it.

Donald Tsang seems to think that everyone should forgive and forget because the country has changed... But how can people forgive when those responsible aren't even sorry?

In the end, we saw what the chinese government did:

1)  They controlled the internet, blocking social sites, chat rooms, and other communication methods to remove the chance of dissent / protest being manufactured online

2)  They controlled dissidents inside the country, giving them "vacations" at government run facilities to keep them out of the loop during the key time.

3)  They didn't over react.  No major crackdowns, no bloodshed, no nothing.

This isn't the Chinese government of 20 years ago,  that is for sure.  Yes, many of the results are similar, but realistically the methods are much more subtle, much better orchestrated, and done with significantly more tact and control.   It sort of explains the reason why it is very unlikely that we would see another Tienanmen Square style incident, because the government now is much better at suppressing what they want with more sane means.

Not that I am a huge fan of China at times, but I can say that many of the Chinese living overseas that I know are looking to return home, they don't feel they would lose much in doing it anymore.
