What's with the over-reaction to rain?

I've been living in HK forever and know almost all that I ever wanted to know about the place, and then some more.

A few odd things still puzzle me, including the over-reaction to the rain.  On my way to the office this morning, there were a few isolated drops of rain.  I got hit by about three drops actually.  I saw one woman walking next to me cringing, with her hand protectively above her head.  I saw another woman cringing intensely. Another one had her umbrella out (really, you get more wet from the dripping aircons or the sweat in summer).

Their reaction was not as if the rain drops were water, but more like arsenic or hydrochloric acid.

Anyone knows what's with the over-reaction to the rain?  I don't recall that it's as bad in other parts of China, Taiwan or Japan, but perhaps I just don't remember clearly and it's just as bad over there.

In Korea they told me that it was because the acid in the rain would make you go bald
Then again, when you're downstream from China, who knows...

Thanks.  That 's a reasonable explanation, that mothers would tell their children that rain makes you sick.  I can see that.

I think its because HK people can be vain - I can't think of any other reason - One or two drops of rain does no damage.

It gets incredibly annoying when ppl block the MTR station exits trying to open their umbrellas when it's just a few droplets of rain! Come on make way! You don't need an umbrella

HK people can be vain? Lol no more vain than anyone else I have found.

Mostly from what I know is they worry it will make you sick. Cold water hitting your head etx.

They are just sissies. I don't mean it necessarily in a bad way. But you know what I mean. The fear of touching the doors etc. I wonder why they don't have automatic doors like in Japan.
