Scam in Taipei

I was in Taipei over the weekend and a scam came up, which I've seen discussed here.
Connection via Line (there were loads of connections on WeChat, but just normal girls to your room).
Connection offers a very good price (alarm bell) and also wants you to come over. Asks for your phone number many times (again I've heard about this being a pressure tactic...) Get close and then suddenly wants you to go to buy gift cards for a convenience store.. insistent. I just cut my losses and went for a drink.
Does anyone know how this scam works?

Very common scam all over Asia, even in Europe/US where they ask for itunes card of similar shit...

1.They basically entice you with very nice pics of gals.
2. Tell you to meet at a place.
3. When you got to the place, they call you and ask you to go to the nearest convenience store to buy a gift card to pay her in advance. (they always find some excuses like, they don't carry cash at their place because they are scared of the police raiding their place etc...)
4. You go and you buy the card, you scratch the number on the card, and they ask you to take a picture of that serie of number.
5. You give the number -> You've been scammed.
6. They block you on line/wechat.

It is happening in Toronto, Canada also.
Maybe bros from Vancouver can update us if this is going on in BC too.
technically if asked to get a card, BAIL OUT

Hey Flowmon, Toronto already ?    Any heads up you can give?  I normally is MoonWaiting guy as they don’t have BullShit like that.  But it’s good to know if you have more intel so we punters stay cool.  Gift card?  As in BestBuy or Itune Gift Card?

OK so they are just scamming you out of the price they gave you (in this case it would have been NT$3,000). Seems a lot of work. You don't think the request for phone number is also going to trigger a follow up call asking for more $?
