I was in serious need of a good therapeutic massage for a hip that’s been irritating me for 6 months; multiple trips to traditional Chinese doctors just said I was exercising too much and to stop jogging and any leg or body stretches I was doing. That was six months ago and for the most part I followed their advice, and their herbal medicines with a few inflammatories thrown in for good measure, but the pain lingers.
I weighted my options: a bbbj with massage? a return to Gold Coast, Queens? go online and find someplace new?
Cherries or Siam came to mind for the first, but that was the little head thinking, around 330rmb for maybe 15 minutes of massage, and 20 minutes of carnal fun, and 20 minutes of them getting their kit and cleaning up … I wanted more!
Gold Coast, yes the last massages there, not too long ago, were great; however their crappy pool’s bubble chairs, rarely operating steam room, and tip-happy pool boys that always seem to be missing when you want the jetted chairs or high pressure taps turned on, and when they do they are on for a scant 60 seconds and you have to start the finding them process all over again left me wanting more too. The Carnival Club Spa came to mind, but their masseuses have never been accused of being even slightly attractive, and the caving-in moldy ceiling above their hot pools is a definite turn off if the first doesn’t bother you.
On line, I found the 678 International Spa and it seemed worth trying as it was very close to a subway exit at the Convention Center exit E. So off I was for a comparable to two places that had left me disappointed. The best decision I’ve made since going to Temple St at 10:30 in the morning.
First, to get there it is so simple:
1. Convention Center Station: Exit E
2. At the sidewalk turn 180 degrees left:
3. Walk 15-25 paces & there’s a two-lane one-way road/ally; cross the road & turn right.
4. Walk another 20-30 paces and the building ends with a walkway and small square turn left on the walkway.
5. About 4 doors down, on the left is the entry way to 678, you can’t miss it as there will be hostess at the entry way.
Secondly, There is one more item that should be mentioned: online the price said 138rmb that was the same price as the brochure in the massage room, but the pool room’s brochure said 179rmb, but the actual cost was the 189rmb displayed in the reception area. It’s possible they are old brochures, but that would mean a hefty increase followed by a slightly higher recent one, or a dual priced Chinese/foreigner price range, or a combination of both.
Thirdly, its not perfect but its almost excellent; A suited host met me right after the elevator, and he took me to a sign banner that said 189rmb for 90” Chinese massage. When I picked this one, which is also the cheapest, he immediately tried to up-sell to an oil massage and said, “I would enjoy it much more,” but my response, “I’m here for therapeutic reasons and the Chinese massage is what I need.” That settled, as he escorted me to the 3rd floor changing room he passed me his phone with a translated message saying I needed to give him 100rmb cash as a deposit for my massage reservation …. that’s a first ever for me. So, I took out my phone and turned on its camera and attempted to take a photo of his message. His face gave a look of shock that was hilarious; as he quickly turned off his phone and pocketed it, and said never mind. So far we’re batting 100, all these guy ‘hosts’ in these places are sleazes to the 9th degree.
I stopped by the spa area for about an hour enjoying its most clean (no mold), organized, and comfortable ambiance: room-within-a-room sauna for hot and hotter, impressive stone-stool steam room, and a large soaking pool, skirted with very cold and super hot mini pools. The best thing: every one of their several jetted options worked, and their three types of high pressure streams were extremely functional. They each had their own individual controls that you could use at your whim … I tried all types they had and all worked flawlessly.
Next, I pajama-up and head towards my date with my masseuse, and was lead through the typical labyrinth of halls to my room. It was two-minutes at most when #169 opened the door, and at first I was surprised by her diminutive but rather sensual size, and a face that looked a little too serious which veiled any hidden beauty.
However, my first thoughts were: 1. Excellent, she can walk on my back and it won’t hurt, like some of the elephants that have stomped all over it. 2. How could such small creature give a strong massage? I was wrong on both counts! I don’t know how she did it, maybe she was pressing against the ceiling rails but her back-walking massage was, at times, excruciatingly painful. She would dig with her heel into every vertebrae, and prod with each toe as if it were a cattle prod. I kid you not, at one point I was going to tap out before I passed out from the pain.
Then the old maxim came to mind: “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” I figured that since I told her about my painful hip that there might be some method to her madness. Instead of being careful around the area she focused a lot of attention to it – her idea worked, at the end of the session the pain was almost gone and there was a gratifying sense of relief. Not orgasmic, but much appreciated none the less.
As for the massage’s sensualness: maybe in stretch there might have been slight hints of more, but I think her straddling my back and legs, as well as placing my hands on the upper thighs, were just wishful thinking on my part, and that it was actually more out of conveniences sake to apply the most amount of pressure she could do.
After exchanging WeChats, so I could book her again, I was off to the lounge to check out its chairs and mini masseuses. I enjoyed part of a movie, and really good tasting cup of coffee, but did not do the leg massage even though a really stunning young beauty came up and asked if I would like anything else with a very wicked, and suggestive smile – definitely something to do in the very near future.
I finished with a return enjoyment to the sauna, steam, and pools to finish my days pampering. The all in price, including 100rmb tip, was 314rmb.
It’s easy to recommend, just watch out for the rep/hosts.
