Reply #20 TonyToro's post

Thanks TT....it appears I am not able to edit at this late date...
But to clarify as you requested...
These  rates are currently listed for Sept 24 thru Oct 1.
The City Garden and the Island Pacific were on both Expedia and Agoda
The Holiday Inn's were best on Expedia
The Newton and the Royal Plaza were best on Agoda
and...the WiFi was best on Asiatravel..but that rate was only available to Sept 30.

One should always remain flexible, as these availabilities and prices can change.
And as you correctly point out, dealing with the hotel direct can often further reduce
the price as long as they are not booked up or at a high occupancy.

Glad I could be help

Depending on the budget of the guests, I recommend Miramar Hotel.

I have stayed there 3 times and just love the location, easy access to shopping, eating and juts about anythng else such as saunas and walk-ins.

Sometimes when I am bored and cannot sleep at night, just pop behind to some of the local saunas nearby...it's great.

Miramar has undergone some outside renovations and love the new look. I haven't stayed there for last 2 years since I have moved to a proper normal flat now. But I think the rooms are the same as before. basically quite traditional since Miramar has been around for a long time...but it's a great hotel and great location.

When I was overseas and came to Hong Kong, Miramar Hotel would be the first one that comes to my mind.

Cheers.

Located on the Eastern side of Nathan Rd North of Salisbury Rd in TST, The Miramar Hotel is now called the Mira. They changed the name when they renovated it and unfortunately ramped the price up as well. Agree nice hotel and well located.

Years ago my office was located in the Tung Ying Building (which no longer exists hence we moved) and this was located right next door to the Miramar. I stayed there a number of times, good size rooms although at that time starting to show their age a little. They had a bar on the ground floor called "Eyes". Good house band but no WGs so we lost interest. They also had a great breakfast buffet on the ground floor right in the middle of the lobby. A great atmosphere. I think a lot of that is gone with the renovation.

HOTEL REVIEWS

To further add value to this thread, I will review the hotels I have stayed at in HK (it may take a while...). I will ONLY review hotels I have stayed at. I will follow a specific format and I invite other Bros who have stayed at different hotels to add those in the same format.

Hotel Name:

Hotel Address:

Hotel Website:

Pic of Front of Hotel:

Pic of Hotel Room:

Star Rating:

Price Range Rating:
Because prices can vary throughout the year, and room styles vary, rather than put an actual price that will vary, indicate which price range the hotel is in, ie.
1 = < $500
2 = $600 - $1,000
3 = $1,000 - $1,500
4 = $1,500 - $2,500
5 = $3,000 up
Also if price ranges change across the board in future, only 1 thread (this) needs to be modified to keep things current.

Convenience for Hotel Girl Punting Rating:
1 = poor and 5 = excellent

Convenience for Walk Up Punting Rating:
1 = poor and 5 = excellent

Convenience for Bar Girl Punting Rating:
1 = poor and 5 = excellent

W/GIRL FRIENDLY: YES / NO

Any special comment:

***SEE POST 24 OF THIS THREAD FOR RATING EXPLANATION***

Please stick to this format so easy for Bros to read in the future. Hopefully between us we can get 50+ hotels up on this guide. Please do NOT review the same hotel twice, if you have a comment to add about a hotel that has been reviewed, simply write a post and refer it back to the original review post number. Please DONT post things like "yeah great hotel"... use rating system for that. Please post your experience and knowledge of the hotel, things that will help other Bros decide where to stay.

Any special comment: A classic Hong Kong Hotel, much of it has been renovated but many of the rooms, whilst very nice, are starting to look a little old fashioned. BIG rooms compared to many other hotels, good food, very convenient to Star Ferry, Harbour Centre Shopping. 10 minute walk to Hari's Bar. 5 - 10 mins cab to Sticky Fingers. You need a swipe card (room key card) to use the elevator. Girl Friendly. Only 3 MTR stops to 37D.

No problem to bring them back to your room. Lower level shopping arcade including a good place to buy eye glasses, sports shoes and Japanese Dept Store SOGO. Only 3 MTR stops to 37D.

except for the Bishop Lei in the Mid-levels and the Wesley in Wanchai - all other hotels in Hong Kong are Girl friendly.

Thus perhaps this item superfluous and instead MAY make readers think that this is a pertinent "feature" that needs actual consideration - which of course it is not.

May I ask how is it that one could make such a rating?

Convenient to Hotel girl?
How can anybody know - since HG's are all over the place in Hong Kong - the same as WG's!
Convenient to which HG/WG????!!

Come to think of it - how were YOU able to give your ratings?
I've never read any reports of you EVER visiting any HG/WG's

Oh Heck!
Why not!
I might as well ask it!

What IS the policy/rules now on naming hotels on this forum?

Are we ONLY restricted from naming hotel names when coupled with a HG report?
What about naming hotels with Tony's Hotel/walk-up/Bar girl punting ratings?

I even researched a bit and came up with this post by Twice on
"Few Noobie Questions"

QUOTE:

For hotel reservations and information please ask your travel agent or visit a travel forum ...
you'll get a lot more information there then here

This thread is now closed ... full names of HK hotels are not permitted on this forum

I think the best thing to do is to do what a reasonable person can agree with ...

The main reason we don't allow naming hotel names is because if a HG is working out of
that hotel then naming that hotel would not be beneficial to the girl and hotel ... it also means
we do not name hotels when anyone asks which are mostly used by HGs or anything to that effect.

A thread like this one, naming hotels for the benefit of travellers does not infringe present forum guidelines.

Thanks for your comments Joe... First I think you've had the hotel issue clarified and that issue can be burried... non issue. Common sense prevails again! I love it when that happens...

Now, you are correct to say I have little experience with HGs only having had a few, and only having reported on 1 or 2 here.

Next issue relates to the ratings based on the convenience of the hotels location to the number of HG's or WUs in the area. I know where there are located and the rating is the opinion of the author of the post. In this case my opinion. Doesn't make it right, just makes it my opinion. Feel free to have an opinion of your own about any of the hotels I have mentioned.

You raise a good point about "girl friendly" and maybe we can add the fact that all but one HK hotels are GF to post #24.

Do you have any more questions?

Joe, in terms of my reports, feel free to do a search yourself...

In terms of your other comment which is characteristically condescending and typically lacking in substance, I am not sure what your problem is? Please don't SPAM a thread that is intended to be useful for Bros travelling to HK.

This is a thread about HK Hotel Accommodations... I am not sure how much experience you have staying at HK hotels? If you have meaningful experience please share it... I would enjoy your observations. If you don't have meaningful experience, I hope it is helpful... That's the purpose of this thread. If on the other hand you are just here playing schoolyard tit for tat games, feel free to return to Joe's word sometime soon.

EDIT:

Joe... if that's how you interpret a polite considered answer to a smart ass question, good for you. I'm not sure if your nose has been put out of joint in the WG Uncovered discussion thread or if you got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning. Either way, be a sport and don't f*ck up a useful thread with SPAM and tit for tat rhetoric. Save that sort of thing for your Idle Chat thread.

I started frequenting HK end the end of 09 (all work related)
Our business counterpart organised accommodation for me at Cityview (old YMCA)
Business relations (with Asian counterparts) always eventuate escapades to saunas, bars, massage parlors and KTV lounges
Its like a ritual to bond after hours to be involved in such circular activities

Nonetheless, my first experience was at Cityview October 09

Hotel Name: Cityview

Hotel Address: 23 Waterloo Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong

Hotel Website: http://www.thecityview.com.hk/en/index.html

Pic of Front of Hotel: (apologies, still trying work out the kinks to upload images)

Pic of Hotel Room: (apologies, still trying work out the kinks to upload images)

Star Rating: 4 Star (Self rated)

Price Range Rating: (No idea, did not pay)

Convenience for Hotel Girl Punting Rating: They have security post after hours where guests have to ID themselves upon return and is rather inconvenient for anonymity

Convenience for Walk Up Punting Rating: 1

Convenience for Bar Girl Punting Rating: did not try

W/GIRL FRIENDLY: NO (WG's are reluctant to ID themselves)

Any special comment:
If you are large bloke (like myself) you might want to look elsewhere. The shower 'shutter/sliding' doors are not designed for us.
Like most HK accommodations, rooms are small and beds are rock hard.
However, the hotel is situated a stone throw away from Mong Kok (MK) and the night life is incredible.
It is also convenient for public transportation, the Yau Ma Tei (YMT) MTR station is just around the corner
Currency exchange agents are also along the same street, my experience their secluded location reduces chances of getting 'mugged' (but that's debatable) (good for MY security conscious) plus i find they have better rates than the others in tourist hot spots
Besides, there are HEAPS of eateries around and I frequently return to the area

Would I return to Cityview? No, too many other choices available

Any special comment:
Very good establishment, great hotel service, but its in the middle of no where
The remote area was inconvenient for any western culture. ie, alternate bars (besides hotel), western cuisines or nightlife
Predominately populated by blue collar families AND extended families as well as the retirees

But the rooms were excellent, cannot fault it!
The rooms where themed, I had Arabian
Plush cushions and mirrors everywhere, even the ceiling above the bed
It was GREAT!

Would I return, No... not ideal after a hard days work to wondering around the neighborhood got me no where

Pic of Hotel Room: (apologies, still trying work out the kinks to upload images)

Star Rating: 4 Star (Self rated)

Price Range Rating: (No idea, did not pay)

Convenience for Hotel Girl Punting Rating: 5 (Double edge sword: no security check and no keycard required to use lift... so they can waltz up to your room for your convenience and so can ANY ONE ELSE for that matter)

Convenience for Walk Up Punting Rating: 5

Convenience for Bar Girl Punting Rating: No necessary, WG's and their mammasan/papasan congregates outside (in the park) awaiting potential customers after the sun goes down

W/GIRL FRIENDLY: YES

Any special comment:
Pros:
Complimentary shuttle back and forth from airport
Free Wifi
Cons:
A little further to trek for the MTR, East TST (about 10mins?)
Needs a make over, looks rather dilapidated

Once you have accepted a 'transaction' downstairs with the mammasan, the WG reports back with your room #
And they'll harass you for another 'transaction' the following night by calling your room
They're relentless, one occasion, the mammasan came upstairs herself to inspect if you had a WG in your room
They'll often bring an alternative just in case for more business

Would I return, maybe... the area was secluded from the busy TST strip but wasn't within reach if required
So I'd try other hotels in the neighborhood
