Recommend me a tailor?

There's a hard and fast rule on this board,  for very good reason : don't go with touts.   I assume that the same goes for the many Hong Kong tailors whose touts talk you into their back alley shops -  if they were any good they wouldn't need to advertise that way.

Moreover,  many of you fine gentlemen have a keen eye for beauty but also on the wallet, identifying gems that are great value for money

So,  I wonder if I might ride the crowd sourcing wave and ask for first hand recommendations for a tailor?   I'm interested in a two piece suit with second pair of trousers.   Light fabric for the Guangdong climate.   May take a couple of shirts too.

Who have you used and at what price?   If you paid a lot,  what made it worth the expense?

Thank you gents in advance

Moth

I've never ended up getting around to getting a suit made - and I'm sure the local bros will have much better suggestions, but I recall an episode of The Layover with Anthony Bourdain where he had a suit made at Simpson Sin Tailor. 15 Carnarvon Road
Kowloon, Hong Kong. http://www.simpsonsintailor.com.hk

I've used these guys lots of times. http://www.simpsonsintailor.com.hk/

After Bourdain showed up they got much busier. Dick.

They do good quality with multiple fittings.

Best tailor I've found is Tailor on Ten in BKK. Tops all around in my book.

I haven't had a tailored suit ever since I gained enough weight to be able to purchase suits off-the-rack.

I still get tailored shirts though and in my last trip last year I go to this old guy on Landale Street by Queen's Road East. Place is called Sun May Shirts and the prices are very reasonable. He can get shirts done within 4-5 business days. Because he is very old, you will have to go in the morning hours. There are other tailor shops in the area. If you have a SO, he gives you a reasonable excuse to be in area as you visit Wanchai.

Many of the good tailors are old or dead. Many shops farm out a lot of the sewing work to Shenzhen and China. It has become harder to find places that still do work in HK like my old guy.

WW Chan for suits. Ascot Chang for shirts. Expensive but you get quality.

Of course if you speak cantonese, that opens up more options like the locals recommended tailors.

Would you like a copy watch or handbag with that suit ?

Be careful of some Indian shops that tell you they can make a suit in a day. No quality suit can be made in that time, and you're in for some discontent down the road.

Lee Baron in TST middle road has always provided good service and reasonable prices. I hear Simpson Sin is also good.

For higher end, H Baroman, WW Chan, Gordon Yao, A Man (Mandarin Hotel), Ascot Chang for shirts.

And if you're made of money, the guys at the Armoury and Atire House can set you up for the best Italy and England has to offer, prices between 30-50K.

My friend swears by the suits made by ascot chang.  I've never had a need for one but when I the few times i've seen the suits made for my friend they are matching to him.

I've found one thing with suits and its you have to find the right type to match your body shape.
