When you rate a report, the forum automatically informs the OP of your rating and any accompanying message by means of a Private Message, which they are far more likely to see and respond to.
When you post a comment in a thread it goes into the thread. OP may or may not read it (and I'd expect to be far less likely to respond favourably than if you bothered to credit the author if only with Acceptance).
In short, give a little to get a little.
